General FAQ

What kind of volunteer opportunities are there?

Volunteers are a necessity to making camp possible! Check out our volunteer opportunities here.

My child is over the age of a camper but has diabetes. How can s/he get involved?

Our junior counselors are 16-17 years old; our counselors are 18 and older. This is the best way to get involved. Additionally, age depending, we do have volunteer opportunities throughout the year with our fundraisers.

Our company would like to volunteer with DYFI, how can we get set up?

Fill out our contact form on our Volunteer Page, and we will contact you to set a date and determine projects.

Can I complete my Eagle Scout project with you?

Absolutely! We have plenty of opportunities for projects throughout the camp. Fill out our contact form on our Volunteer Page, and we will contact you.

What are the rental rates?

Rental rates are determined by amount of days the group will be at camp, usage of camp, other additions such as pool and ropes, as well as how many people you have in your group. Please note that pool rates vary depending on dates. Check out our Rental Page for more info.

Is there a discount for 501c3 non-profits?

We try to accommodate and have reasonable rates. However, we are a 501c3 non-profit also and cannot use DYFI funds to help pay for outside groups. All rates are carefully calculated on usage, costs associated, along with supplies provided.

Where does the money from the fundraisers go?

Money raised from our fundraisers go toward camperships for youth, supplement the difference between the cost of camp and the price we charge families, supplies and food at camp, and for projects to make camp better (repairs and additions for the campers.)

Are there openings on the Board of Directors?

We are strategically adding to our Board of Directors. We are looking for passionate individuals looking to make a difference for youth with Type 1 diabetes. We have an active fundraising board. If you are interested in learning more about joining the Board of Directors, contact our Board Chairman at jrussell@thinketg.com.

Do you only serve kids from Indiana?

While majority of our campers come from Indiana, we do have some campers who will come from other states, including bordering states. We do not discriminate and are an equal opportunity employer.

Who owns the DYFI camp?

The Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana is the owner of the campground. It is the only camp in Indiana that is specifically owned and operated for youth with Type 1 diabetes.

Can youth with Type 2 attend camp?

Youth with T2D can attend camp if they are insulin dependent.

Is the food at camp sugar free?

We have a lead dietician who plans all of the menus for our camp. We focus on fresh fruits and veggies as well as healthy food choices. While we may have some sugar free items such as syrup, the majority of our items are not sugar free.

Are there events outside of camp?

We do have fundraisers, weekend camps, and outreach programs throughout the year. All of these events are communicated through our bi-monthly newsletter and our facebook page. Also, check out our Events Page for more information.

Is DYFI a part of JDRF or ADA?

No. The Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana is a local non-profit with 2 full time staff. We are not affiliated with JDRF or ADA. We work together with other organizations within the community to benefit all families with youth with T1D. While we are a write-in for United Way contributions, we are not a United Way organization.

Is DYFI accredited with the American Camp Association?

Yes. We meet or exceed all of the standards set forth by the ACA. Every three years, we are visited to maintain our accreditation.

I want to meet other families with youth with T1D in my area. Can you help me with that?

Absolutely! We have a new Connect option that is a safe environment to connect the parents of youth with T1D. Each parent must be approved by our directors, and the directory will be monitored by our staff. Click here to Connect!
